UNIT 3. TERTIARY SECTOR

The tertiary sector is the service sector that is made up of businesses that sell manufactured products and services to consumers.It is divided into different areas:

  • HEALTH SECTOR : dentists, doctors, nurses…
  • EDUCATION SECTOR: teachers
  • PUBLIC SAFETY: police officers, firefighters, soldiers and security guards.
  • TRANSPORT SECTOR: bus drivers, taxi drivers, trains drivers, lorry drivers…
  • ADMINISTRATION: bank clerk, secretaries, civil servants…
  • CULTURAL: musicians, writers, actors and painters
  • TOURISM: tour guides, receptionist, waiters…
  • JUDICIAL SYSTEM: judges, lawyers and prosecutors
  • RETAIL is the area which sells products to consumers., for example: shop assistants, shop managers…

TRANSPORT INDUSTRY

It moves passengers and products from one place to another. There are four types of transports:

  • Water transport: passengers and products are transported by water.
    • Cruises  for people
    • Cargo ships for heavy products
    • Tankers for liquids
  • Rail transport: passengers and products are transported by rail.
  • Road transport: passengers and products are transported by road.
    • Cars
    • Lorries
    • Buses
  • Air transport: passengers and products are transported by air.


TOURISM INDUSTRY

It provides accommodation and entertainment for tourists. There are different types of tourism; beach, cultural, adventure, rural cultural tourism…Spain is one of the most popular tourist destination around the world because our culture, weather, food…

RETAIL

It is the selling of products to consumers. They can be small, medium or big:

  • Specialist shops are small shops that sell only one type of product or service. They are usually in the city centre.
    • Opticians, toy shop, fruit shop…
  • Supermarkets or departments stores: are large business that sell a variety of products. They are usually in  shopping centre.
    • Lidl, Aldi, Mercadona…
  • Markets are where sellers meet to sell their products. They can be outdoors or indoors.
  • Internet: many business offer online shopping. More than 50% of the population buy online. 
  • Hypermarkets are very large supermarkets and they sell food and many other products. They are usually ate the outskirts of the cities.
    • Carrefour, El Corteinglés…

ADVERTISING

Advertisements tell consumers about a service or a product. They try to persuade people to buy the product. They can be:

  • On television
  • On the Internet
  • In newspapers or magazines
  • In the street

There are some aggressive advertising that try to get the consumer´s attention using different things such as:

  • Big and colorful letters
  • A product that will be different from the one that you will buy
  • Pop up adverts on the Internet
  • Lying.

Responsible consumption is buying the things that we really need, controlling the use of products and services.


THE SECTORS OF ECONOMY IN THE EU

  • Primary sector is the 5% of the economy: agriculture and fishing.
  • Secondary sector is the 22% of the economy:  motor, textile ship, building industries
  • Tertiary sector is the 73% of the economy: transport, health, tourism, financial services… 

ADVANTAGES OF THE EU FOR TRADE

There is lots of trade between the EU members because there are economic links and transport links 

  • The European Union occupies a small geographical area, so the time differences are small too, this makes easier to do business.
  • Another reason is because the EU has a common currency, the euro, this makes trade easier because companies don’t have to worry about changing money.
  • Transport links have improved between countries in the EU.
